BSix Flying High

BSix, Hackney’s sixth form college in Kenninghall Road, has continued to make remarkable progress. The publication of the national league table shows that the College is now sixth out of the 46 colleges in London.

The College’s points score per student has risen from 583.1 to 689.4 in just three years. The College has out performed highly selective college. On average, students now leave with a grade C or above at A Level and three Merits or above on a BTEC National Diploma course. Moreover, the average points per subject has risen dramatically from 204.1 to 219.2. This is the fourth highest of all colleges in London and is a testimony to the quality of teaching and the classroom experience at the College.

The league tables also measure the performance of students relative to the GCSE results they had when they started college. This measure is called ‘distance travelled’ or value-added. Like last year, on this measure, BSix is again in the top 5% of all schools and colleges in the country. Even more, this year BSix is the best college for value-added of all colleges in London.

“You can imagine that we are absolutely thrilled with these results”, says Ken Warman, the College’s Principal. “it is a measure of the dramatic progress we have made in the last couple of years. We have had two really positive Ofsted reports, record recruitment this year and our students have been going to national conferences to talk about what we are doing”.

These kind of results explain why the College is so popular. Last year was a record year for applications but, already, applications for a place this year are four times higher.

“There is a real buzz about the place”, Philip Elliott, Deputy Principal, comments. “Morale and pride among staff and students are understandably high. As a result, young people are keen to be part of the BSix experience”.
