Principal's Question Time at BSix

BSix is well-known for its "student voice" activities. These include the Learning Advocacy scheme, student inspections and speaking at national conferences. Another important part of this is a termly Principal's Question Time.

In the session the Principal and other members of the Senior Management take questions from tutor group representatives who have discussed any issues they wish to raise with their classmates. There were lots of searching questions. If the College continues to grow as it is growing, then there will need to be more science labs. Are there any plans? Yes, if we need to either bring in more buildings or convert existing classrooms, then we will. Is there any way of bringing down the price of food in the canteen? No, the price of food is rising all the time but it is still a maximum of £3 for a full meal. The food is fresh, healthy and exceptionally tasty and represents excellent value for money.

Students and senior managers also discussed plans for the complete refurbishment of the library. There was some disagreement about this with some students wanting more computers and others wanting to emphasise the role of books and silent study.

At the conclusion, senior managers said that there are three groups of issues: those that need to be resolved immediately-and can be ; those that cannot be solved ; and those which have to be resolved by all of us , staff and students. The point was also made that the last Question Time had led to a transformation of the College's catering , the regular celebrations of diversity in the canteen and the installation of a cash machine. The student voice is loud and clear at BSix and is heard.
