GCSE Sociology

How far would you agree that:

  • parental attitudes are the most important influence on a child’s educational achievement?
  • it is realistic to talk of a typical British family today?
  • teenage criminal and deviant behaviour results from parents failing to socialise their children correctly?
  • social class remains the most powerful influence on the voting behaviour and political beliefs of a British citizen?
  • children born into poverty will grow up to be poor throughout their lives?

Sociology is the study of societies and the way that they shape peoples’ shared behaviours, beliefs and identity. Sociology is an extremely diverse and compelling discipline, and this is a particularly fascinating time to study it. As society continues to change, Sociology develops and evolves with it. It enables us to make sense of the rapidly changing world that we live in, and understand our roles within it. This course explores the concept that the way we think, behave and feel, indeed our very sense of identity, is socially produced.
